Residency with Yue Yin

Houston Contemporary Dance Company will be commissioning an existing work, Sigra Sigra by internationally recognized choreographer and performer, Yue Yin. Read more about her below and see the HCDC Premiere October 23rd, 2026 at the Miller Outdoor Theatre!

The founder and artistic director of YY Dance Company (YYDC), Yue Yin is an internationally recognized performer and choreographer. Yin studied at the prestigious Shanghai Dance Academy and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where she received her MFA in 2008. In 2018, Yin founded YYDC, a NYC-based, non-profit contemporary dance company dedicated to the teaching, production and performance of original choreographic works by Yin. Yin’s signature FoCo Technique™ represents a dynamic fusion of folk, ballet and contemporary dance. YYDC’s mission is to incorporate Yin’s signature movement style into live performances and choreographic commissions as well as educational endeavor. Under Yin’s direction, the company has presented its work to live audiences on U.S. and international stages. Yue was recipient of 2021 Harkness Promise Award. This prestigious award recognizes her innovation in choreography and education. She was the winner of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago 2015 International Commissioning Project, winner of the 2015 BalletX Choreographic Fellowship, and winner of Northwest Dance Project’s 5th Annual Pretty Creatives International Choreographic Competition in 2013. Through these high-profile successes, Yin has received commissions from all three widely-recognized companies as well as other companies and organizations namely Martha Graham Dance Company, Boston Ballet, BalletMet, Oregon Ballet Theater, Philadelphia Ballet, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Limon Dance Company, Alberta Ballet, Balletto Teatro di Torino, Gibney Dance Company, Peridance Contemporary Dance Company, Whim W’him, Bruce Wood Dance, Ririe Woodbury Dance Company, Boston Dance Theater, 10 Hairy Legs, New Dialect, Backhausdance, Tisch School of The Arts, George Mason University, Rutgers University, Point Park University, West Michigan University and Juilliard School for Dance.

Bringing two of Houston's most exciting dance companies together, Houston Contemporary Dance Company and Vitacca Ballet for one evening!

This program will include from HCDC OCTANE by Natasha Adorlee Emmy Award-winning choreographer from San Francisco, CA and Houston World Premier of Sigra Sigra by acclaimed international choreographer Yue Yin, plus our second company, HC2 will perform a work by Morgan Manning.

Christian Denice will be in residence with HCDC February 25th- March 5th, 2027 . Catch his World Premiere on HCDC in “Rejuvenate” on May 1st, 2027 at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts at 7:30PM.

Christian Denice is a Los Angeles born dancer, choreographer, and educator whose career bridges classical and contemporary dance. His performing credits include Odyssey Dance Theatre, River North Dance Chicago, and Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. He has been recognized as one of Time Out Chicago’s Top Ten Male Dancers and was named a Chicago Tribune Notable Dancer in 2010. As a choreographer, Christian has created works for a wide range of professional companies including Cincinnati Ballet, Rosin Box Project, Nevada Ballet Theatre, BalletX, Tampa City Ballet, Chamber Dance Project, Ballet22, DanceWorks Chicago, Marigny Opera Ballet, Odyssey Dance Theatre, Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company, Missouri Contemporary Ballet, MADCO, Eisenhower Dance Detroit, Houston Contemporary Dance Company, Kit Modus, Dance Lab New York, and Wylliams Henry Contemporary Dance Company. His choreography has been commissioned by professional companies and university programs throughout the United States, and he continues to teach and set work internationally. His choreographic voice explores the complexities of the human experience, using dance as a vehicle for reflection, sensation, and connection. Christian is the winner of the 2015 University of South Florida Echo Choreographic Competition and was selected as a choreographer for the Joffrey Academy Winning Works program in 2016. He was the Choreographic Fellow for BalletX's 2025-2026 season and premiered a new work for the company with an original score by Philip Daniel. He recently created his first full evening original narrative ballet for Marigny Opera Ballet, which premiered this past December. His residencies include Kennesaw State University, Keshet Center for the Arts, Georgetown University, University of Missouri Kansas City, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Interlochen, Western Michigan University, Joffrey Midwest and Joffrey New York summer intensives, and Stage de Danse de Mansle in France, among others. Christian is a dancer for internationally acclaimed Greek choreographer Andonis Foniadakis and frequently stages his work throughout the United States and Europe. He has also served as répétiteur and rehearsal director for ISHIDA Dance.

Residency with Keerati Jinakunwiphat

Keerati Jinakunwiphat will be in residence with HCDC March 15- March 19th, 2027 . Catch her new work on HCDC in “Rejuvenate” on May 1st, 2027 at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts at 7:30PM.

Keerati Jinakunwiphat is a NYC-based choreographer, performing artist, and movement director originally from Chicago. She received her BFA from SUNY Purchase and has worked with and performed works of artists such as Kyle Abraham, Trisha Brown, Kevin Wynn, Doug Varone and more. Keerati began working with A.I.M. by Kyle Abraham in 2016, and choreographed her first work for the company in 2019. In 2023, she had the honor of becoming the first Asian American woman to be commissioned to choreograph for the New York City Ballet, resulting in Fortuitous Ash, with music by Pulitzer-prize winning composer Du Yun. In addition, Keerati has been commissioned to set and create works on Malpaso Dance Company, New York Choreographic Institute, Bang On A Can, Princeton University, Fire Island Dance Festival and many more; her choreography has been performed at venues including the Joyce Theater, New Victory Theater, American Dance Festival, Kampnagel, MASS MoCA, Lincoln Center, Works & Process at the Guggenheim, New York Live Arts, Chelsea Factory and more. Keerati has graced the cover of Dance Magazine as one of their 25 to Watch in 2021. She was awarded a 2023 Jadin Wong Fellowship Artist of Exceptional Merit by the Asian American Arts Alliance, a 2023 Princess Grace Award in choreography,  and is a 2025 NYSCA/ NYFA Artist Fellow in Choreography. Keerati was a 2024 Artist in Residency at the Baryshnikov Arts, where she recently premiered her debut evening-length work, Of Dishes and Dreams, and is a 2025-26 Artist in Residence at the 92NY's Harkness Dance Center.

Houston Contemporary Dance Workshop

The Institute of Contemporary Dance Houston presents the Houston Contemporary Dance Company in a six day workshop geared toward the pre-professional and professional level dancers (Ages 15+) that are interested in a full choreographic experience while learning more about Houston Contemporary Dance Company.  This workshop will consist of one technique class a day, Rep class and then the afternoon working on creating a new choreographic work from our 2 Guest Artists ( to be announced). Attendees conclude in a special performance on Sunday, June 21st, 2026 at the Institute of Contemporary Dance. There are no classes on June 19th, 2026 in observance of Juneteeth. Acceptance into the workshop is by audition only with limited in studio spots. If you cannot audition in person or virtually, please submit a video audition here.

Toward Joy

On April 11th, 2026, at 7:30PM, Houston Contemporary Dance Company will present Toward Joy, at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts for one night only! This concert will feature a world premiere by Brooklyn-based artist Joe Celej.  Celej, who has ties to the Houston dance scene for over 20 years, brings his eclectic dance background to his works, drawing from his long-time career as a performer and choreographer under dance icon Elisa Monte in NYC. The program will also feature Slump by acclaimed choreographer and Artistic Director of Dark Circles Contemporary Dance Joshua L. Peugh. Peugh’s Slump explores the thrilling chaos of courtship and mating rituals through explosive movement and intricate partnering. Towards Joy will be rounded out by If I Fall…Will You Catch Me?, choreographed by award winning artist Tamisha Guy.

Students will witness how dance can explore themes of resilience, creativity, and connection, while also modeling a fearless approach to artistic experimentation. This concert will feature a world premiere by award-winning artist Tamisha Guy.  The program will also include powerful audience favorites Citizen by sought after choreographer Yin Yue, Breakroom After Dark by Summation Dance Co-artistic Director Taryn Vander Hoop, and A Friend of Dorothy by Houston based artist Travis Prokop. Guy, who currently performs with A.I.M. directed by Kyle Abraham, is a Princess Grace Award recipient and the 2022 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Dance.

Residency with Tamisha Guy

Tamisha Guy will be in residence with HCDC September 29th- October 3rd, 2025 . Catch her NEW World Premiere on HCDC in “Fall Collection” November 8th , 2025 at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts at 7:30PM.

TAMISHA GUY, is a native of Trinidad and Tobago, studied at Ballet Tech under Eliot Feld, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, and SUNY Purchase. She joined the Martha Graham Dance Company 2013. Awards include the 2016 Princess Grace Award and 2022 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Dance. She was named one of Dance Magazine’s 2016 “Top 25 to Watch” and Dance Europe’s 2017 “Best Dancers of the Year.” Guy currently dances with A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, is a Lecturer in Dance at Barnard College, and is the Founder of HUETAPE, a skin-toned kinesiology tape brand celebrating the unique needs of melanated individuals.

Resilience

Houston Contemporary Dance Company presents Resilience, celebrating the completion of the company’s sixth season, with a guest performance by our second company, Houston Contemporary 2.

Resilience will feature a world premiere by Houston-based educator and choreographer Travis Prokop, centered around the LGBTQ+ community. This evening will also include other signature repertoire, including Citizen by internationally recognized performer and choreographer Yue Yin, a new work premiering in April by Jacob’s Pillow Choreographic Fellow Natasha Adorlee, and another new work premiering in February by Houston-based choreographer Stacey Allen.

Houston Contemporary 2 will also present works by educators and choreographers Erina Udea and Shelby Nunn. 

The Houston Contemporary Dance Company’s mission is to ignite passion for contemporary dance by providing world-class professional repertory concert performances and community engagement activities that are accessible to all regardless of race, culture, sexual orientation, gender, gender variance, or nationality.

Residency with Travis Prokop

Travis Prokop will be in residence with HCDC May 12-16th, 2025. Catch his NEW World Premiere on HCDC in “Resilience” June 27th , 2025 at the Miller Outdoor Theatre at 8:30PM.

Travis Prokop currently serves as Assistant Professor of Dance for the University of Houston. Travis received his B.F.A. from West Texas A&M University and M.F.A. from Sam Houston State University. Travis has taught in higher education for ten years, urging dancers to develop ownership of their movement style while exploring their ‘personal brand’ within dance performance. Travis specializes in teaching forms of jazz dance, contemporary dance (with modern dance principles), aerial silks, dance composition, dance history, and the appreciation of dance as fine art. Travis hopes to help dancers carve out their path in the dance industry. 

Many universities have commissioned Travis as a guest lecturer to choreograph original dance works and for theatre productions, such as Safe at Home, and musicals like Urinetown. Professionally, Travis showcases his choreographic work across North America under the name ‘Prokop_Theory Dance.’ This collective focuses on integrating 2SLGBTQIA+ culture and history into concert dance. Travis’ choreography has gained notoriety from many industry adjudicators, who have deemed it “Yummy” (Rosanna Tavarez), “Powerful” (Shani Collins), and “Complex” (KT Neihoff).

 Originally from New Mexico, Travis has been dancing for thirty years. His training spans from Los Angeles to Italy, allowing him to combine aspects of concert dance and commercial performance. Travis has been a soloist for Lone Star Ballet and dance captain for TEXAS: The Outdoor Musical. He has performed nationally with numerous dance companies from Houston, TX, and has appeared on multiple national television shows, music videos, and commercials. Travis's performance style encourages authentic and spontaneous movement with personal interpretation, and he continues to engage, educate, and entertain the dance industry.

Pre Register and submit your materials HERE. All dancers auditioning, must fill out the form before the audition. Artists must be 21+ and legal to work in the United States at the time of being hired. Identifying BIPOC artists are highly encouraged to audition.
